The Importance of Natural Light
12:00PM 10 December 2022
The importance of natural light cannot be understated. It helps our bodies produce Vitamin D, improves our circadian rhythms (the 24-hour sleep/wake cycle) and sleep, enhances our ability to focus, and has even been proven to make us healthier. Generally speaking, safe and regular exposure to sunlight makes our lives easier, better, and more productive. However, now more than ever we are spending less and less time outdoors. As such, it’s never been more important to find ways to add natural light to a room in the home. So, we decided to write this little helpful guide for you.
Add Mirrors and Shiny Objects
Adding mirrors to a room is great. They make it feel more spacious and bring a fresh and airy quality. But did you know that they improve natural light too? This is because they reflect sunlight back into the room. The same goes for other light-catching bits such as metallic fixtures, glass objects, and reflexive surfaces.
Choose Bright Colours
Colour will do one of two things to light: absorb or reflect. So, when trying to add natural light to a room, maybe it’s worth replacing your darker colour scheme with a conducive one – think whites, creams, or other bright colours.
Windows and Doors
If you have small windows, replacing them with larger ones will guarantee a much brighter space. The same goes for doors. If, for example, your kitchen has a door leading directly to the outside, installing a French door or patio doors would invite lots of sunlight in during the day. While not a very cost-effective method, this is one of the best ways to add natural light to a room. If, however you would like to find a cheaper way, then we might have an idea…
Fit Plantation Shutters
When trying to invite more natural light into the home, it’s vital to have a window dressing that facilitates this. That’s where planation shutters come in. Versatile, stylish, and practical in equal measure, shutters grant a level of light management that’s unrivalled when compared to other window dressings. They’re also perfect for any room in the house, including as a bedroom window dressing.
Shutters’ movable slats allow you to control the level of light that comes into the home, while opening the panels completely allows for maximum exposure. The differing styles also have an impact.
Full Height shutters cover the whole window, whereas Café Style shutters are fixed to the bottom half only. This allows you to maintain your privacy while still bathing your room in natural light. For a mixture of the two, Tier-on-Tier shutters are comprised of two separate sections. The panels open independently on the top and bottom.
