How to Prevent Carpets From Fading

12:00PM 05 October 2023

Carpets are great, right? They’re stylish, elegant, and you don’t have to worry about them getting damaged by the wrong foot ware. One thing that’s not so great about carpets, however, is fading. In the wrong environment, a once bold and beautiful carpet can go from vibrant to vibe-less. No thank you. But before you go getting rid of your new carpet, hold up. There are a few steps you can take to keep them looking lively for years to come. But before we get to that…

Why Do Carpets Fade, Anyway?

  1. Sunlight exposure: Too much exposure to UV rays is the most obvious cause of fading. The UV rays break down the carpet’s dyes and fibers, causing them to lose their colour and sheen over time.

  2. Chemical reactions: Household cleaners, air pollutants, and certain chemicals can trigger fading by interacting with the carpet's dyes. There, you may see gradual colour changes over time, leading to an uneven and dull look.

  3. Wear and tear: High foot traffic, improper, or too much cleaning can wear your carpets down over time.

How to Stop Carpet Fading

Luckily for you, there are a few things you can do today to keep your carpets in tip-top condition for years to come.

  1. Proper treatment: Regular hoovering and preserving your carpets with protective treatments are a great way to stop carpet fading. Just remember to reapply them periodically.

  2. No shoes, please: Tracking dirt and chemicals from outside is one of the biggest causes of carpet fading. A no-shoes rule mitigates this, and means you’ll have to hoover less often too.

  3. Limit sunlight exposure: Whether it’s by repositioning furniture, or adjusting your window treatments, this is one of the best ways to protect your carpet. Speaking of window treatments…

Save Your Carpets with Shutters

Believe it or not, an effective window treatment is a great way to keep your carpets looking fresh for longer. Our recommendation? Well, maybe it’s no surprise what gets our vote. With their movable slats, plantation shutters allow you to control exactly how much light comes into the room.

Shutters aren’t just good for preserving your carpets, there are plenty of other benefits too. Whether it’s privacy, ventilation, insulation, or style, you won’t find a more practical (or fancy looking) window dressing.
