Do Energy Efficient Window Treatments Matter?

12:00PM 27 October 2022

If in the last year, you’ve turned on the news, looked at social media, seen a newspaper, or had a conversation on the street, it’s almost certain that you’ve come across the words “energy crisis”. Everybody’s bills are getting more expensive, and this shows no signs of slowing. In fact, British energy bills increased by 54% in April 2022, with another increase in Oct 2022.

As such, saving money on energy wherever possible is more important than ever. Insulating your home and avoiding heat loss is a vital step toward keeping costs as low as possible. With sufficient insulation, you’ll avoid putting the heating on for longer than necessary in the winter months.

Do Energy Efficient Window Treatments Matter?

Well, the short answer is “Yes”, but while you’re here we may as well delve a little deeper. Did you know that windows account for over 30% of heat loss in the home? Even when closed, many windows are prone to drafts, while condensation is another major factor – especially with single-glazing windows. So yes, having a dressing that effectively keeps the warmth in is very important in keeping your energy bills down. And, of course, you’ll want to be comfortable as well. This moves us perfectly onto the big question: What’s the most energy-efficient window treatment?

Shutters, curtains, or blinds?

The issue with curtains and blinds is that, while they will give you some heat retention, they leave space between themselves and the window. This allows for a lot of heat loss and irksome drafts to creep in. Also, curtains and blinds require quite a bit of maintenance and need to be replaced every few years – especially where blinds are concerned. You simply won’t have these issues with shutters.

Do Shutters Insulate?

They most certainly do. Our insulated shutters are measured to the exact specifications of your windows. And not only this, but they fit flush with your window recess. With plantation shutters, you won’t have to worry about any drafts creeping through and giving you a chill. Plus, when their movable slats are completely closed, they work even harder to keep your home warm.

However, you don’t need to take our word for it. In 2018, Historic England carried out some research into windows’ thermal performance. Their studies found that made-to-measure shutters can reduce heat loss but up to 58%! With that kind of insulation, you’re sure to save a bundle on your heating bills.

Which Insulated Shutters Work Best?

Regardless of style or material, plantation shutters prevent heat loss in the home. However, while our slatted thermal shutters are more energy efficient than other window dressings, our solid shutters offer even more coverage. Because they have no movable slats, there is even less space for drafts to creep through. This also makes them a great choice for noise and light reduction. However, if you’re set on slats, no problem. Our full height shutters cover the entire window and will still give you an excellent level of insulation.
