Reduce the Glare in Your Home Office

12:00PM 02 March 2023

Working from home was once a luxury, and then it was a necessity. Now, well, you could say it sits somewhere in between. Many of us still work from home at least one or two days a week. If you fall into this camp, you’re well aware of the challenges that come with home working. A big issue for many can be maintaining focus throughout the day. Let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to concentrate on a spreadsheet or email chain when surrounded by all your home comforts. But what if what’s effecting your productivity is a little more… environmental? Window glare can massively effect productivity, as well as causing eye strain and headaches.  Well, there are a few things you can do to mitigate against the sun’s rays.

Window Film

There are numerous brands of window film out there that are quite effective at reducing window glare. Window film is a thin, transparent film that is applied directly onto your windows. Not only does it help to reduce glare and UV ray exposure, but it can also improve your home’s energy efficiency by keeping the room cool in the summer. However, there are some cons too. Some window manufactures warn that using film will void their warranty, and poor application can leave a window looking bubbly (not the end of the world, but who wants bubbly windows?). Plus, some brands are more efficient than others, so it can be a roll of the dice.

Regorganise Your Office

If you don’t mind moving things around, repositioning your furniture and workstation can be a quick fix to combat glare. Of course, it won’t reduce window glare, but it could prevent it from impacting your work. Move your screen out of the sun’s grasp, tactfully position a bookcase, or carefully place a plant or two on the windowsill. While the light will still creep through, it’ll go some way to solving your problem until the real solution arrives. By “real solution” we of course mean…

DIY Plantation Shutters

If you want a surefire way to reduce glare in the home office, made-to-measure shutters are a tried and tested solution. Not only do they come in several different designs and colours, but they’re also incredibly hard wearing and long lasting. But besides their aesthetic qualities, it’s their movable slats that make them so effective in reducing window glare. Unlike other window dressings, slatted shutters give you the ultimate control over light and privacy, making it easy to keep the room well-lit while still being able to see outside. And if you want to take things a step further, our solid window shutters are designed to cover the whole window, offering a near-blackout light reduction. Plus, look at how pretty they are!
