How to clean plantation shutters

3:18PM 19 February 2026

Quick Answer: To clean plantation shutters, dust weekly with a microfiber cloth or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. For deep cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, ensuring you dry the slats immediately to prevent warping. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers that can damage the finish.

How to Clean Different Shutter Materials

The best way to clean your shutters depends entirely on what they are made of. Using the wrong method can lead to warping or paint damage.

Shutter Material Cleaning Method Why?
Natural Wood Dry Only. Use a microfiber cloth or ostrich feather duster. Moisture can seep into the grain and cause the wood to swell or warp.
Faux Wood  Slightly Damp. Use a cloth wrung out until nearly dry. These are more durable, but the core can still be sensitive to excessive water.
Waterproof Vinyl Soap & Water. Mild dish soap and a damp sponge. 100% moisture resistant; ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.

Step-by-Step: The Best Way to Clean Plantation Shutters

Follow this 4-step process to keep your window treatments looking brand new for years.

1. Dust each shutter slat

To keep your shutters clean, take a dry, no-polish dusting cloth or feather duster, open your slats, and dust each slat one by one. Then turn your slats and do the opposite side. We tend to recommend microfibre cloths if your shutters are within reach to clean such as for cafe style shutters, or an extendable feather duster if your shutters are too tall for you to reach. If you have solid shutters, simply dust down with your cloth for the perfect clean.

2. How to hoover your window shutters

Hoovers are great cleaning tools for plantation shutters. You can easily hoover the dust off your shutters for a deep clean. Be attentive with the nozzle you use, however. Especially if you have light coloured white shutters or grey shutters. We recommend you use the soft brush nozzle, not hard-edged or metal nozzles which can scratch the surface.

You can also run it along the hinges, the tilt rod (if yours has one), and the frame. This removes hidden dust that can cause the louvers to become stiff or squeaky over time.

3. Spot Cleaning Stubborn Marks

Shutters that are in areas prone to heavier stains, such as splashes from a kitchen sink, or fingerprints in a child’s playroom are simple to clean. If you have wooden shutters, take a very slightly damp cloth and rub the soiled area of your shutter until it’s clean, then immediately dry it off with a clean, dry cloth so that moisture doesn’t penetrate the wood. If you have Waterproof Polyvinyl Shutters then you can use a damper cloth for wiping any stains away. Waterproof shutters are built to withstand splashes and are water-resistant.

  • Pro Tip: If water alone doesn't work, add a single drop of mild dish soap. Never spray cleaning solution directly onto the shutters; spray the cloth instead.

4. The Final Polish

Always finish by wiping the shutters with a fresh, dry microfiber cloth. Removing lingering moisture is the most important step in preventing long-term damage to the finish.

Essential Shutter Maintenance Tips

Beyond cleaning, follow these three rules to extend the life of your shutters:

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use glass cleaner, bleach, or ammonia-based products. These can eat through the protective UV coating and cause yellowing.

Check the Tension: If your slats are "drooping" or won't stay open, locate the tension screw on the side of the shutter panel and give it a slight turn with a screwdriver.

Lubricate Only When Necessary: If hinges are squeaky, use a tiny amount of dry silicone spray. Avoid oil-based lubricants (like WD-40), which can attract more dust.

Paint over stains that aren’t budging: If your shutters have seen wear and tear or if on the odd occasion, there’s just no removing that pesky stain, we provide all of our customers with a small bottle of shutter paint in their shutter colour. Use a small paintbrush to touch up the stained area, and your shutters will look as good as new.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cleaning Shutters

  • Can I use baby wipes to clean my shutters?  Yes, unscented baby wipes are excellent for spot-cleaning faux wood or vinyl shutters, as they are mild and contain very little moisture. Avoid using them on natural hardwood.
  • How often should I clean my shutters?  We recommend a quick dusting once a week and a detailed deep clean every 3 to 6 months to prevent grime buildup in the hinges.
  • Can I use a pressure washer or a hose on waterproof shutters? No. Even if the material is waterproof, the internal hardware (screws and hinges) and the seal around your window frame are not designed for high-pressure water. Stick to a damp sponge.
