Make a Small Room Look Bigger
1:31PM 10 February 2022
Whether it’s a bedroom, lounge, bathroom, or otherwise, making the most of your space can be a real challenge with a small room. Not to worry though - there are plenty of things you can do to exploit the space you already have and make your room seem that little bit roomier. Spoiler alert: we recommend plantation shutters for small rooms, but you probably knew that already. Before we get to that, however, let’s cover some of the basics first.

Declutter The Space
We’re sure this is quite an obvious one, but it’s still worth mentioning. When trying to create more space, the first thing to do is to remove the clutter. That means clearing any unnecessary furniture, keeping the space tidy, and ensuring the walls are minimally adorned. Oh, and it might be time to rethink those curtains hanging from the windows. Curtains often protrude into the room, making it feel smaller and less spacious.
Let In the Light
Whether the light is natural or artificial, a room will always look bigger when its well-lit. Therefore, it is important to ensure you have a window dressing that’s great for light management. Dark and heavy curtains or blinds will not only block out lots of light, but they also add a moodier feel too. This makes light-coloured shutters for small rooms the perfect choice (but more on this later). Oh, and we don’t just mean external light either. Choosing a bright and airy colour palette will create the illusion of more space in even the tightest of spaces.
Don’t Forget Your Mirrors
Reflexive surfaces are ideal for expanding the feel of your small room. For maximum effect, we would suggest going for as large a mirror as possible, either mounted on or leaning against a wall. You can also incorporate a mirror with pieces in the room, such as a mirror topped coffee table or mirrored chest of drawers. Want to go one step further? Why not go whole hog and install a mirrored wall?
Add Shutters Of Course!
So, which type of window dressing ticks all the above boxes? That’s right, plantation shutters! By sitting flush to your windows, they don’t unnecessarily take up previous space in your room. And besides looking fantastic, with they’re movable slats and hinged opening, they are great for letting the light in.
Our shutters are available in a range of styles: Full Height, Tier-on-tier, Café, and Solid. Unsure about colours? We offer a wide range of beautiful colours as well as 11 different wood stains and 4 limewash finishes. You really are spoilt for choice!
